To her surprise, the cook had barely started on the morning meal when Makenna entered the kitchen. The Djinn had shown her its fearsome display all within a few scant minutes rather than the hour or more that seemed to pass while Makenna was captivated by its power.

Makenna felt heat rise in her cheeks as she suddenly realized the full power the being truly held. The ability to slow time, to change into whatever creature it wished. She wondered if it could change to human form as well and had only just had the thought when the answer slithered around her brain.

“Yesss.“ It uttered snakelike and whispery, responding to her unspoken thought, chuckling again as it felt Makenna’s mental repulsion to the sensation it caused.

“Are you alright?” the cook asked, a touch of motherly concern in her voice, noticing the shudder that ran through the young woman as she stood near the table.

“I am fine, Rochelle.“ Makenna replied, using the cook’s former name, looking pointedly at her, a challenge in her eyes.

“There is no need to address me as so. Cook will do.” The older woman said, her own face flushing scarlet with anger, or perhaps only flattered that Makenna remembered it.

“Why should I not use your name? It is who you are,” retorted Makenna, tossing her silky hair back from her face. Her dark eyes glinted with pulses of fire as she spoke.

“We are the Nameless. I am Cook.” The woman responded. “You are Lord Wellington’s First Servant. That is who you are.”

“That is not ALL that I am, not anymore.” Makenna snapped; her tone much sharper than before. “I am Makenna. I am someone’s daughter. I am my own person. I will be someone that others will remember.”

“You will be six feet under if you keep speaking as such.” The cook reprimanded her. “You forget your place. What darkness has taken hold of you?”

“The same that should have taken hold of you and the old mothers long ago. Anger. Rage. Fury. Courage. Things you seem to have forgotten that you possess.” Makenna glared at her, not in anger but in unspoken challenge. “What would you give to be free of this life? Of this misery that we endure?”

“I have nothing left to give.” The cook replied, turning her eyes back to the porridge on the stove. Weary defeat lined her face. Sorrow had settled in the depths of her soul so long ago that it glistened from the gray storm of her eyes.

“You still have your life. You are but fifty serving years old. Are you so far dead inside? Are you so spent and dried up that you can see nothing else? Yearn for nothing more? Does your soul not cry at night for the babes that you birthed and never saw? Do you not remember who you are? Who you were?”

“You know nothing!” The cook retorted; her gray eyes flashed furious lightning at Makenna. Rage made her hand shake as she held the spoon aloft.

“You forget, Rochelle, how many nights you nursed my wounds in your bed.
